Barrel-Strength Whiskey

One-Twenty is Barrel-Strength because it’s bottled at the same proof as it comes out of the barrel. Typically, modern whiskey is distilled at a high proof (typically 130-160 proof) then watered down to barrel strength (typically 100-125 proof) for aging in barrels. Modern whiskey is then watered down again to bottling strength, usually 80-90 proof.

Harkening back to the days of the Old West, when your whiskey was always barrel strength, the slightest hint that it was watered down would get the proprietor’s head smashed with the offending bottle…the Wild West equivalent of a bad social media review.

Barrel-Strength is whiskey turned up to 11! It is best served with a bit of ice and/or dash of water to open up the aromas and full flavor. It will also benefit from a few minutes of “breathing” before enjoying. This will allow some of the higher volatile alcohols to evaporate instead of burning your olfactory senses.

Viscous, robust and spicy. You’ll notice how the liquid sticks the sides and slides down. This is an indication of the thick mouth feel to come. It blooms warmly from the glass with aromas of honeyed pears, cream caramel and sherry. The flavor strikes hotly but not too aggressively with hints of oak, toasted marshmallows and golden syrup..

One-Twenty cocktail recipes

One-Twenty Old Fashioned

1 1/2 oz. One-Twenty Barrel-Strength Whiskey
3/4 oz. Simple Syrup
1 1/4 Orange Wheel
1 Maraschino Cherry
3 dashes Angustura Bitters

Glass: Old Fashioned
Garnish: Muddled Orange and Maraschino Cherry

Instructions: Muddle orange, Maraschino cherry, and simple syrup in glass. Fill with ice and add One-Twenty Whiskey. Stir to mix, dash with bitters, and splash with soda water.

One-Twenty Manhattan

1 1/2 oz. One-Twenty Barrel-Strength Whiskey
1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1/2 oz. Dry Vermouth
3 dashes Angustura Bitters

Glass: Old Fashioned
Garnish: Maraschino Cherry (or Griottines Cherry)

Instructions: Add One-Twenty Whiskey, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth, and bitters to rocks glass. Add large ice cube and stir to mix. Strain into old fashioned glass and add cherry to garnish.
